Stir up some military action, pour this over a bit of romance, layer it on top of clashing cultural differences and what you have is TO DIE FOR... Against the wishes of her family, journalist Maggie Schmidt accepts an assignment to war-torn Afghanistan. It doesn't take long for her to realize that a cycle of revenge runs through this society. Be it the Taliban lashing back at the American military, attacks on Afghan girls striving for an education, or resistance to Western aid workers violence rules the day. A burgeoning romance, with a former soldier, thrusts Maggie directly into this crossfire.

A fast pace story by this new author of two young family members, born a generation apart, yet joined in ways that only fate can bring about! The prologue sets the stage and it is one of those books you can't stop reading! This is a novel of war and its horrors but it also spoke to me of great love and loyalty. I learned a lot about this culture and the things our troops endure. And, on a lighter note, I enjoyed the many references to the Buffalo area (the main character's hometown).I highly recommend this book!

TO DIE FOR AFGHAN JOURNEY edition by Margaret Schwab Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Very well researched thriller
Well developed story! Lots of insights into the challenges of a Westerner, like Maggie, struggling with life in a foreign and conflicted society.
I couldn't wait to read it every night. Sometimes descriptions were lenghty. .Otherwise, an excellent story.
This is a very engaging thriller! Great insights into life, war & romance in Afganistan. Excellent descriptions of Afgan culture, country & most enticing food. Lots of interesting contrasts here too , hope she writes another book soon.
This is a fast paced thriller based in Afghanistan. It is a murder mystery with Taliban and Al-Qaeda lurking in the background. It is also a tragic love story. Plot is developed skillfully and unfolds in a suspenseful manner. Author shows a lot of expertise in the local culture of Afghanistan and Islam.
I found it quite enjoyable. Language is simple and expression is effective.
Book could have used a good proof-reading. Some typos have crept in. 'Damn' is spelled 'Dam' everywhere in the book. Figuring from the context, 'Indian bebe' should have been 'Indian bidi.' Early in the book, year 1970 is supposed to correspond to 1384 Hijri but later 1969 is supposed to correspond to 1348 Hijri! It is also said that our date 10/04/1969 corresponds to 10/04/1348 Hijri. Actually our months and dates don't correspond to Hijri(Islamic) months and dates at all. Islam follows a lunar calendar that is why Ramadan can fall in any season of the tear.
All-in-all it is a pleasant read.
Excellent job by the author in bringing the sights and sounds of Afghanistan to life. Good plot and characters. Very easy to read and kept my attention. I hope she writes another book soon. Only criticism is for the editor - too many misplaced punctuation marks and incorrect words (then for than, their for they're, pass for past, etc.).
I related to the everyday life descriptions, like the crowded streets, and wrangling over prices, as I've spent a good amount of time in India. I found Sam to be very amusing because he's so out of his preppy element in a place like Kabul. The story does reflect that it's still a dangerous place. The story is well written, with different things going on, but it all connects. Good read.
